1. IS IT SAFE FOR YOU TO HELP
    • Is the electricity switched off?
    • Are there still flames that can burn you?
    • Is there too much smoke (carbon monoxide)?
    • Is it possible for you to get hurt, if yes, phone for help!
  2. STOP THE BURNING PROCESS
    • Place the burnt areas under cool running water for at least 15mins
    • Do not place ice or icy water on the area as this makes the damage to the skin worse
    • Do not use any lotions or potions (eg: toothpaste, butter etc)
  3. PHONE FOR HELP WHILE COOLING THE BURN
    • 082 911 or 084 124 or 10177
  4. COVER THE BURNED AREA WITH A CLEAN DRESSING
    • Burnshield if possible. Cling wrap, a clean sheet may be used.
    • Don’t remove any dead skin or break any blisters. Let the doctors decide!
  5. PREVENT THE CHILD FROM GETTING COLD
    • Cover the child after the burns have been dressed, to keep warm but not too hot!
